Green Roof Systems visits the National Home Improvement Show- Earl’s Court, London.

In October 2010 we were fortunate enough to share a stand at the show with Hertalan UK for the 3-day event in London. On show we had Hertalan’s EDPM membrane; a highly durable, flexible and eco-friendly waterproofing membrane. Also on display was a typical green roof system complete with sedum blanket, slow growing grass and other plant life for the green-fingered visitor. This drew well over 212 visitors to the stand and goes to show the excellent visual effects and interest green roofs create!

Overall we were very impressed by the typical homeowners interest in our green roof systems. The majority were interested in green roofs on their domestic applications- extensions, garage roofs, summerhouses and new builds alike.

Many said they had windows/ areas overlooking certain parts of their house and that a traditional roof material was too boring and not a nice thing to look down on. A green roof was the answer!

Others mentioned that they were constructing within conservation areas in Central London, and that green roofs were integral to gaining planning permission for their extensions or new builds. When told the benefits of this system many were surprised when comparing it to a typical roof construction; lower energy costs, longer roof life, a recreational area for the family and encouraging wildlife to name but a few.

The overall feel of the show this year is that in the current economic climate customers are having to tighten their purse strings now more than ever. When the overall cost savings of green roof systems are calculated over their lifetime (with prolonged roof material life expectancy and reduced energy bills) the inquiries began to roll in! Very exciting news for Green Roof Systems and its fantastic that the green roof message is now being appriciated by developers and the general public alike.
